The AJ Retrofit awards sponsored by the Architects Journal, are a renown set of acknowledgements that recognise and celebrate the professionals behind the renewal and development of existing buildings, leading the way in mitigating the industry’s carbon expenditure. The AJ Retrofit Awards recognise well-designed sustainable projects and promote material and structural reuse in the built environment.

IQ have been lucky enough to have collaborated on projects which have been previously nominated for a variety of the different categories awarded at the AJ Retrofit awards. Something of which we are immensely proud of and something that celebrates the hard work done at IQ to produce the finest glazing solutions for these projects, to firmly reinforce our position as the market leaders in delivering high quality glazing solutions.

This year is Another successful year for IQ the AJ retrofit awards With IQ receiving 4 nominations for a variety of different projects in a multitude of different projects.

BAFTA with Benedetti Architects

IQ were involved in the development of the extensive refurbishment and expansion of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Headquarters at 195 Piccadilly. Designed by Benedetti Architects, the new development included enlarging the entrance, creating a David Lean room featuring the latest technology, new flexible event spaces and a new fourth floor which is home to the Richard Attenborough rooms. The brief was to include high functioning rooms while adding an additional storey on top of the existingGrade II Listed Building. The most recognizable feature of the Richard Attenborough rooms is the wall lined withslim framed sliding doors, creating cascading light to bleed through the gold partially opaque curtains.

The work done by IQ’s projects on the Bafta headquarters has been recognised by being shortlisted for cultural and religious building £5m and over, for the 2023 Aj retrofit award as well as countless other architectural awards. This project Acted as a showcase of our ability to deliver high quality glazing solutions to some of the most prestigious cultural projects across the UK.

27 Farm Street with Garnett Architecture

The second project of which IQ collaborated on that has been nominated for the 2023 Aj retrofit awards was 27 farm street with Garnett Architecture. Located in Mayfair in central London, this project represents great significance with Mayfair being renown as one of the most prestigious areas of real estate not only in London but also the whole of the UK. Reflecting the stature of the projects that IQ are fortunate enough to collaborate on.

The circa 6,000sqft scheme involved transformation and extension of a self-contained office building arranged over two floors. Theproject included part demolition of the original building, remodelling of the exterior elevations, introduction of a new atrium with feature staircase, reception and new rear services extension. Features include a double height internal green wall, steel trusses with tongue in grooved ceiling and a landscaped terrace to the rear. The quality of this refurbishment has been recognised with it being recognised by the AJ retrofit awards for the workplace up to £5 Million.

Eighty Strand with PDP Architects

80 The Strand

IQ collaborated with PDP Architects to provide a contemporary upgrade to transform the iconic, Grade II Listed, 80 strand, which occupies a prominent position on the river Thames. An impressive and welcoming entrance pavilion has been created to re-orientate the building and be more reflective of Covent Garden. A new, fully glazed entrance pavilion has increased the floor area for the reception and greatly improved the arrival experience to the building. With Frameless glass fire rated doors supplemented the existing double height reception space, with the addition of landscaping and seating for both the workers and the public to create a community hub.

Lea Bridge Library with Studio Weave

Lea Bridge Library is an award-winning architectural extension to a Grade II listed building, featuring minimal windows 4+ and curved glass within the timber extension structure. Using exposed natural timber internally allows Lea Bridge Library to merge the internal and external spaces using architectural glazing and natural materials. The minimal windows glass sliding doors are a key part of that design, creating key access points within the structural glass facade and giving access to the green leafy courtyard of the library space. The architectural design by Studio Weave has been noticed by the architectural community and awards panels, being shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit awards as well as RIBA London regional award in 2023.

Chart Street Studios with Ian Chalk Architects

We cannot forget the success of Ian Chalk Architects and Chart Street Studios who won the 2022 Overall AJ retrofit Award.

This was retrofit of an existing 1930’s furniture warehouse in Hoxton, which championed the use us sustainable structural timber to form the new elements of the building, combined with new bespoke double glazed steel windows This building is greatly enhanced by the vast abundance of natural light and ventilation. Elevating this property to its current level that enabled it to win both the retrofit of the year and workplace up to £5m awards.

The redevelopment of a 1930's former furniture warehouse in Hackney. Using CLT panels and glulam beams. IQ manufactured designed and installed north-light, windows maximizing indirect light. To the side of the existing building, a lightweight CLT extension complementing the new sawtooth roof structure sits over the original yard, creating light-filled space for meetings, alongside a new stair and lift core and a new covered entrance to the building.
