Bicester Village Train Station
he newly opened Bicester Village Train Station means you can now travel straight to the outlet boutiques of Bicester Village from London Marylebone or Oxford Parkway. The platforms have been finished with a luxury, contemporary design to keep a cohesive image across Bicester Village with the Bicester Village outlet centre directly accessible from the new modern entrance on the station platforms.
The station has been completely rebuilt to form part of Chiltern Railway’s new £130m Oxford to London Marylebone rail link. IQ was commissioned to design, fabricate and install a structural glass roof link between the platform and the station.
Bespoke glazing was created by IQ with an aluminium mesh interlayer laminated within the glazing using the latest glass laminating technology. The decorative laminated glazing offers a luxury contemporary finish and a great visual effect to what could be just a simple glass structure. The mesh interlayer within the laminated glass creates a more robust elevation, the added security is key for this installation within a public area.
Each installation of structural glazing created by IQ is a bespoke design, engineered to suit each project carefully for a suitable construction and a unique appearance. The structural glazing designed for Bicester Village Train Station was secured in place using steel spider arm clamps, a hard wearing, common mechanism used in public spaces. The steel spider arm clamps and frameless structural glazing forms the contemporary ‘spider glazing’.
The spider glazing allows maximum daylight to enter the station but still provides shelter from the weather for the travelling passengers. Bicester Village outlet centre is the main destination of most arriving at the train station, therefore the station needed to be designed to deal with overcrowding. The structural glazing forms a link between the platform and station seamlessly, making the most out of the space available.
