Grand Cafe De Twee Wezen
his café restaurant is located in the centre of Hengelo in the Netherlands and has been designed with a welcoming atmosphere in mind. The design combines traditional elements with modern glazing technologies such as retractable glass roof to enhance the functionality of the space and make it suitable for year round use.
The warm, family atmosphere is created through the use of bistro table and chair sets, with a range of seating options from wicker garden furniture to benches for casual dining. The owners wanted to recreate the warm atmosphere of the restaurant on the terraced area and extend the dining area to accommodate more seats. To achieve this, a retractable glass roof was specified to create a fully sheltered and watertight dining area.
Retractable glass roof systems are perfect for leisure and hospitality projects, allowing visitors to experience an indoor-outdoor dining experience no matter what the weather. The addition of the retractable glass roof to the restaurant meant they could almost double the number of tables, as well as giving diners the option of where they would like to dine.
The retractable glass roof to the restaurant is fully thermally broken, creating a comfortable temperature inside the terraced area and allowing the restraint to use the space all year round. During the warmer months, the roof can be opened in sections depending on how much sun/shelter is desired or opened fully for an open air dining experience.
To create a fully weatherproof environment, fixed glazing was installed around the roof structure. The glass walls were designed with various glass door solutions to create multiple access points, allowing plenty of routes for the wait staff to reach every table. Although the space is enclosed, it was imperative for the surrounding glazing to be as minimal as possible to maintain the outdoor dining experience without compromising on modern performance values.
The result of the retractable glass roof in the restaurant was transformative, with the use of umbrellas and other outdoor dining areas giving guests a variety of options. During the winter months, the retractable glass roof stays closed and the space acts as a standard indoor dining room, offering the flexibility that the restaurant needed to enhance its functionality and increase its business capabilities.
