Savile Row 23 with Curved Bay Windows

Curved Bay Windows to Savile Row Office

IQ Projects was contracted by Signature London to create curved bay windows, along with a series of other bespoke glazing elements for the office renovation at 23 Savile Row.

Initially designed by Eric Parry Architects in 2009, MoreySmith was approached by the client to redesign the interiors and entrance to integrate the highest quality materials into the building, creating the feeling of luxury and opulence throughout.

The front elevation glazing was a key part of this new design, offering visitors to the building a first impression of the luxury offices. Here, bronze detailing, curved clear glass and frameless glass elevations helped to develop the architect’s vision for a luxury office development.

The Curved Glass Bay Windows Design

IQ completed a series of glazing sub-contracts on this project including the external curved bay windows to the front elevation.

The curved glass designed as part of the glass façade were very tight on the corners. This required a bespoke approach to the glazing design to ensure that the size, curvature and frameless design could be achieved whilst maintaining high thermal performance for the envelope.

Collaborating with MoreySmith, IQ provided technical design support throughout Stage 4, sketching details and designs to ensure that the glass specification was correct, and the fixings were accurately included within the building structure build up.

The key aspect of the curved glass design was the radius required for the corner elements of the bay windows. There were two bay windows within the front elevation design, both of different sizes and depths. Here, the glass curved at a radius of 607mm on the tightest corner which required a specialist approach to the glass specification and design.

IQ created a series of details for the curved bay windows to integrate seamlessly into the elevation, connecting fixed flat glass to curved elements with no framing.

Full engineering designs and calculations were also created by IQ to showcase the performance of the elevations under wind and to specify the exact fixing and installation requirements for the windows.

The Metal and Glass Specification of the Curved Windows

A metal fixing system was utilised within the construction of the curved bay windows. IQ used a combination of a fixing section with bespoke metal base plates to create both the strength and design required for the central London façade.

All framework was finished in a bespoke bronze finish to match interior fixings and fixtures.

The glass was all double glazed, using a dual coating application to provide high levels of thermal insulation without having to increase the glass specification to triple glazing – which would have severely complicated the glass and curve designs.

Using a combination of solar control coatings and low e insulating coatings IQ achieved a U value of 1.4 W/m2K for the curved glass elevation.

Integrated Doors into the Curved Bay Windows

Due to the high visual impact of the curved glass windows, you may not notice the small, hinged door set within the design.

To the side of the revolving glass door is an automated entrance door, used as the entrance to the building when the revolving door is closed. Attention to detail had to be considered for this design to ensure that it did not detract from the overall design of the glass entrance.

Using a bespoke bronze finish to match the rest of the exterior, the automated door merges seamlessly into the structural glass design with bespoke fixings designs by the team at IQ.

An integrated floor mounted operator provided the automatic opening for the bronze door which was operated via a combined BMS system, connecting the reception control to an intercom and a separate internal activation button.

Installation of the Curved Bay Windows

Due to the central London location, all of the glazing installation had to occur outside of working hours. IQ’s installation teams worked overnight on Savile Row to install the two glazed bays in one fitting, minimising the impact of disruption to the road and minimising costs of road closures.

Using a 28-sucker attachment to a Hiab, the glazing was installed from the street under the cover of darkness. The heaviest panel of glass within the external elevation weighed 505kg, measuring 1.9m wide and 3.7m tall.

The Curved Glass Façade

The resulting glass façade is a testament to the collaborative design of the architects, developers and the team at IQ who all strived for excellence at all points. The glass curves offer the best combination of high performance and precision detailing, using bronze and glass to elevate an exterior design to a luxurious finish.
