Iconic Structural Glass Pavilion at Plas Glyn

A striking new structural glass pavilion designed by Mark Wray Architects is a stunning new addition to Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, the oldest art gallery in Wales.

Located near to the coast, marine grade Invisio structural glazing was specified since the large elevations of glass would need to withstand high wind levels. The sculptured architectural envelope has handcrafted metal components including 89,000 individual stainless steel barnacles creating a permeable layer that filters the natural light. Slim framed sliding glass doors create seamless entrance with maximum light and views through the circular openings of the Invisio structural glazing emulating the marine-inspired shell shape.

Structural Invisio glass to Plas Glyn urchin-inspired pavilion

To create a cohesive design which serves, not just as a decorative structural glass pavilion, but as practical and a high-performance piece of architecture that would deliver on water tightness and thermal efficiency throughout the seasons.

Mark Wray Architects worked with IQ Projects to deliver a new café and venue for a variety of events including weddings that would complement the Grade II listed art gallery and replace the unsightly thermally poor conservatory.

The marine-inspired sea urchin shape with circular openings were installed from the inside with Invisio frameless-effect structural glazing creating the illusion that the glazing had been cut to the shape of the circular openings.

The structural glass pavilion is illuminated throughout the day with natural light from 270 degrees allowing guests and visitors to enjoy views of its rural setting. The central structure has strip light LED’s which coordinate with corporate event settings and create ambience scenes after sun set.

Floor to ceiling slim framed sliding glass doors form part of this elegant and inclusive design. The flush threshold detailing provides seamless transitions from the outside to the inside, perfect for wheelchair users.

The new structural glass pavilion café increases visitor capacity. Full of light and expansive views through the frameless Invisio structural glazing, this charming and sympathetic structural glass pavilion that opened in May 2023 is already proving to be a highly desirable location for weddings with sliding glass doors with flush thresholds creating a permeable and accessible façade, providing guests with stunning views to the verdant landscape beyond. The pavilion's design effortlessly blends elegance with functionality, making it the perfect setting for memorable celebrations.

In addition to weddings, the space can also accommodate a range of events, from intimate gatherings to larger corporate functions, all while maintaining a strong connection to the natural beauty of its surroundings. This architectural masterpiece not only enhances the visitor experience but also strengthens the cultural and social value of the Plas Glyn-y-Weddw Arts Centre.

This fusion of traditional and modern design has been featured in Architects Journal to further commend its elegance and beauty, and has been shortlisted for the 2024 RSAW Welsh Architecture Awards.
