Glass specification was coordinated for visual quality and resilience. Low-iron glass is used throughout for colour-neutral clarity. A non-reflective make-up reduces surface glare and mirror-like reflections so the new structural glazing in Hereford sits quietly within the cloisters. Solar control glass is applied across around 18 square metres to help moderate solar gains, and the same area of glass was heat-soak tested to reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulphide inclusions. The visible metalwork adopts a non-standard Axalta Alesta Supranodic Brown finish, selected to harmonise with the surrounding fabric.
Together, the automated entrance and structural glass screens bring a refined, contemporary edge to the cathedral’s circulation while maintaining a respectful presence. The result is a clear, accessible threshold that supports daily use and special services with precise detailing and a restrained visual language.
