Gainsborough House extended with a new cafe and accessible art gallery connecting the old with the new through slim sliding glass doors creating a permeable link to the outdoors.
The historic Grade I Listed Building extension was sensitively designed by Architects ZMMA, and recognised by The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) honouring its outstanding expansion, restoration and revival, a project that masterfully marries the historic fabric of the artist’s birthplace with contemporary architectural glazing elements. The transformation has not only preserved the historic buildings but has developed the site with modern facilities that enhance visitor experience and engagement with Gainsborough’s legacy, and enable Gainsborough’s House to mount major exhibitions.
An integral part of the restoration project was the addition of a new orangery-style café situated within the grounds of the Grade I Listed building. The sliding glass doors of the café were an essential aspect of the design, as they offered visitors a stunning view of the 18th-century garden and provided a seamless transition between the café and the outdoor space.
Adam Zombory-Moldovan, Principal at ZMMA said:

Credit also goes to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other financial supporters who made this ambitious project possible.
